Three of the founding members of the MULTOS consortium, Keycorp, Hitachi, and Mondex International Ltd, today announced an escalation in their investment in the MULTOS multi-application smart card assets, by acquiring from StepNexus Holdings Inc. the United Kingdom operations: StepNexus Limited and MAOSCO Limited, along with additional intellectual property rights and registered patents.

Banrisul, a bank in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, was awarded runner-up position in the Latin American Issuing Organisation category at the OSCA (Oustanding Smart Card Achievement) awards on May 12th in Orlando. The award recognised their innovative project that combines a private-label EMV application with Brazil's national PKI scheme on a single MULTOS multi-application smart card.

Gemalto acquires Multos business from Keycorp
Amsterdam, September 2nd, 2008 - Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 - GTO), the world leader in digital security, today confirmed that it has completed the acquisition of Keycorp’s smart card business, the leading fabless provider of MULTOS™ products and services to the Financial Services and Government sectors, and of Multos Ltd, the company that operates the remote activation service and high-security facility that is at the center of the MULTOS security architecture. Gemalto is paying 25.7 million Australian dollars (approximately 15 million Euros, or 22 million US dollars) for Keycorp’s smartcard business assets, IP portfolio, trademarks and Multos Ltd.
